Bloomingdale is one of the earliest villages settled in what is now DuPage County and traces its founding to the year 1833. Today, the Village encompasses approximately seven (7) square miles of land and has an estimated 2018 population of 22,016. With its convenient location, approximately twenty-five (25) miles west of the City of Chicago, Bloomingdale residents enjoy big city benefits in a small town atmosphere. Bloomingdale offers first class schools, abundant recreation opportunities, is situated amid plenty of open spaces, while boasting a wide and varied retail and commercial/industrial base.

The Village is a home-rule community that provides a full range of services including police protection, construction and maintenance of streets and infrastructure, building permit and inspection services, recreational and social events, water and sewer services and other general government services. It operates under the statutory Village form of government which includes a President (or Mayor) and six (6) Trustees, and one (1) Village Clerk who collectively form the Village Board of Trustees. The Village Administrator is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Village's seven departments of Administration, Finance, Police, Public Works, Building & Zoning, Engineering and Information Systems.

Purpose of Position

The Village of Bloomingdale Engineering Department is accepting applications for the position of Civil Engineering Intern for the 2019 summer months. The Civil Engineering Intern will assist Engineering staff with various municipal infrastructure improvements, as noted under Job Responsibilities.

Work hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The rate of pay for this position is $12 to $14 per hour, (depending on qualifications/experience), with an expected work week of 40 hours.

Job Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the Village Engineer and the Senior Civil Engineer, the work includes CAD, construction management, surveying, observing construction activities and measuring completed work for payment, traffic counts, construction materials testing, and other functions as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates should be an entering Junior or Senior majoring in Civil Engineering at a 4 year accredited university, with a thorough knowledge of engineering mathematics including plane geometry, trigonometry and the ability to read engineering plans and specifications.

A valid driver's license with a safe operating record is required, and the successful candidate must be able to furnish reliable transportation to worksites.
